I hadn't bought a new mattress in a lot of years. But finally I did buy one and someone mentioned that I should also get a mattress protector. "A mattress protector, isn't that what sheets are?", I thought. As it turns out, no. Sheets will not protect your mattress from spills, dead skin, dust mites, moisture from your body, bacteria etc.

Over time all these things slip right through your sheets and get embedded into your mattress and once they are there it is tough to get them out. That is where this protector comes in. This is like a fitted sheet except on one side it has a thin layer of brushed cotton and on the other side it has a thin layer of some type of rubberized material (I'm not sure what it is but it is waterproof). When I ran it through the washer there was some water left stuck inside the protector because it was caught up in the waterproof layer.
