This item is not what I was hoping for. It has a pvc backing like the old style crib pads. It stinks like crazy, which I am assuming is the VOC's coming off of it. It's been in direct sunlight for a whole day and smells worse than before! How can that be?
It is indeed waterproof, though. Tried scrubbing it with a Borax paste, and it doesn't go through the pvc layer, though it also seemed unable to strip any factory detergent/chemical smell off of it.
I don't know if I can send this back, but if I can, I will!

This does protect your mattress from water, etc., but you can tell there is plastic underneath the sheets. I noticed that I have been sweating now that we put the mattress cover on. Its still cool in our place, so I hope it doesn't get much worse in the summer, or we will have to remove it.
